Pier Foundation With Arches - Black Cotton Soils.

Fig. 3.32 shows a typical pier foundation for a wall carrying heavy loads. Piers are dug at regular interval and filled with cement concrete. The piers may rest on good bearing strata. These piers are be connected by concrete or masonry arch, over which the wall may constructed. If required, a concrete beam may be provided over the arch if the arch is constructed of masonry. The arches are constructed with a gap above the ground level. This gap would permit free vertical movement of soil during swelling and shrinkage operations.
